I don't want you to think that I don't have any ideas about Josh and Nilay's upbringing, here they are:

I think of Nilay as being raised by intellectuals who didn't quite know what to do with the likes of him, so they mostly peered at him from their vantage point, regarding him as a curiosity - interceding when absolutely necessary, but letting his personality simply manifest without too much parental fiddling.

I think of Josh as being raised by people who are exactly like him.  though he's from Pittsburgh, so I don't think of his parents as vegan.
